The countdown

Your four-year mission checklist.

Tick things off as you go. Your rocket climbs with every checkmark.

0%mission complete

Freshman year

Talk to your guidance counselor early and make a plan for your high school academics.
Check out extracurricular activities at school and in your community.
Search for leadership opportunities and summer internships.
Volunteer with local groups and events at school and in your community.
Talk to your parents about college plans and costs: saving, loans, grants and scholarships. A plan now takes the pressure off later.

Sophomore year

Take the PSAT for the first time if it’s available, to see your strengths and a starting point for SAT/ACT study.
Sign up for tutoring or test prep if you need it. The earlier you start, the less stress at test time!
Check in with your guidance counselor and sign up for honors and AP courses if you haven’t already.
Keep volunteering and getting involved with school and community groups, teams and activities.
Look for non-traditional scholarships; some are open to underclassmen.

Junior year

Sept–Nov: watch scholarship deadlines (some big ones fall in junior year) and early admission or summer study options.
Sept–Nov: retake the PSAT for practice, or sign up for the official SAT or ACT.
Sept–Nov: research majors and careers, then start narrowing your list of schools.
Dec–Feb: plan college visits (ask about tours and meeting faculty in your major) and take the SAT or ACT for the first time.
Dec–Feb: narrow your list to 10–15 schools and keep searching for scholarships.
Mar–May: retake the ACT/SAT if needed.
Jun–Aug: visit more target colleges and finalize your list: deadlines, admission requirements, tuition and fees, essays and interviews.
Jun–Aug: start drafting application essays and ask teachers and mentors for recommendation letters early.
Jun–Aug: outline your financial aid plan and keep applying for scholarships.

Senior year

Sept–Nov: complete the FAFSA for federal student aid.
Sept–Nov: retake the SAT or ACT if you can improve, and make sure scores go to every college on your list.
Sept–Nov: revise application essays (ask a tutor or teacher for feedback) and check in on recommendation letters.
Sept–Nov: double-check deadlines (early admission ends soon) and apply for Bright Futures.
Dec–Feb: keep applying for scholarships and grants, and fill out the CSS Profile if your schools require it.
Dec–Feb: research work-study options and submit nearly all applications before March.
Mar–May: track acceptances, compare financial aid awards and consider loans if needed.
Mar–May: make your final decision, send acceptance paperwork and any deposit, take AP exams and send scores.

Paying for college

Grants and scholarships help, especially if you attend a school outside your home state.

Vocational programs

College isn’t the only path. Trade programs are shorter, practical and career-focused: welding, carpentry, cosmetology, plumbing, locksmithing, electrical, motorcycle and automotive repair, floral design, medical transcription, hotel and restaurant management and many more.
